THE PROBLEM WITH JOAO CANCELO

 


Joao Cancelo is an amazing footballer and on his day can make magic happen at any moment but he has a few problems that will most likely stop him from being considered as one of the best full backs of all time by both fans and critics alike.



First of all his defending leaves a lot to be desired.Attacking wise, Joao Cancelo is your man for the job and can create something out of nothing but his defending is god awful at times. His defending often reminds me of my neighbors, directionless and useless.If he could just sort out his weakness in defending, he'd be a complete fullback.After all, a full back's first and main priority above all else is to defend and defend well before even considering how good a full back is in attack.After all the legend Sir Alex Ferguson said it himself"attack wins you games but defence wins you titles" so it doesn't matter how good you are going forward if you are poor defensively as a fullback, it only worsens the team.



His temparmental attitude.There is a reason why Pep Guardiola told Man City to let Joao Cancelo leave the club.It seems that he is way more problematic than he seems.According to reports, in his debut, Season he threatend to leave Man City because Kyle Walker was the first choice right back and he wasn't getting enough playing time.It took a great deal of effort from the Man City director and Pep Guardiola to convince him to stay and he did and he managed to nail a starting spot for two straight season largely due to the fact that Man City are a possession based team so they don't really defend much and the system Pep used during that time played to the strengths of Joao Cancelo.Shortly after the start.of the 2022 2023 season, his performances for both club and country declined massively resulting in him being benched in the knockout stages of the World Cup in favour of Diego Dalot after poor performances in the group stage and being benched in Man city on his return from the World Cup.He started to throw fits after becoming a bench warmer and slowly but surely, his relationship with Pep Giardiola turned volatile.The straw that broke the camel's back was when during a team meeting ahead of a crucial FA Cup clash against Arsenal, he put on a headphones and was scrolling on his phone the entire time Pep Guardiola was giving out tactical instructions.I am pretty sure that even a player like Lionel Messi wouldn't dare put on earphones during a Pep Guardiola team meeting.So after this Pep Guardiola was like"alright I need this guy outta the club" and the Manchester City Officials immediately granted his request and sent out Cancelo on loan at Bayern but he was loaned to Barca after the end of the previous decision due to Bayern Munich not wanting to pay a huge amount for Cancelo.At Barcelona he started well but recently he has been badly exposed in games against the likes of PSG and Real Madrid, especially since most of the goals conceded in those games came from his side of the pitch(for example all the 3 goals Real Madrid scored against Barca at the Santiago Bernabeu came from Cancelo's area of the pitch) and as a result, he has come under massive criticism with some fans even threatening to "take care" of his family. 

Football is a game of highs and lows so hopefully he learns from this,improve the aspects of his game he is weak at and comes back as better player and a better person
